The College of Business at Florida State University has four teaching awards, three of which are endowed by Charles Hardwick (BS FIN ’62; MBA ’64), a College of Business Alumni Hall of Fame member and passionate supporter of teaching excellence. The awards are:
- Charles Hardwick Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for Tenure Track Faculty
- Awarded annually
- Charles Hardwick Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for Specialized Faculty
- Awarded annually
- Charles Hardwick Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award
- Awarded annually
- Charles Hardwick Distinguished Teaching Award
- Awarded periodically
The recipients for each of these awards are announced at the college’s annual Faculty and Staff Banquet held in the spring semester.
Undergraduate Teaching Award Eligibility & Criteria
Eligibility
- Nominees must be College of Business faculty members.
- Nominees must teach undergraduate courses. Graduate teaching is not considered for this award.
Criteria
These awards are designed to recognize faculty members who create excitement in their courses, engage more deeply with students to create a sense of mutual appreciation and explore innovative teaching methods. As such, these faculty members will serve as examples and inspire other faculty in the College of Business.
Teaching excellence is multi-faceted, involving a wide range of behaviors. The following are included as criteria.
The teacher:
- Is helpful to and takes a personal interest in educating students;
- Uses creative or innovative instructional techniques;
- Is receptive to students' viewpoints and ideas;
- Relates his or her field to other disciplines;
- Organizes and presents subject matter in ways that interest and stimulate students;
- Helps students make discriminating judgments among competing options;
- Challenges students' thinking and assumptions;
- Helps students grow in intellectual stature and skills;
- Provides a positive role model to students regarding the value of a university education;
- Inspires students to work hard and to have pride in their work;
- Emphasizes the importance of values and standards in academic and non-academic life;
- Imparts a respect for truth and a love of learning;
- Finds ways to help students achieve and enhance their self-esteem through the demonstration of mastery;
- Encourages students to be critical and discerning in their learning and educational career; and
- Shows respect for all persons regardless of gender, age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, creed, nationality and mental or physical condition.
Graduate Teaching Award Eligibility & Criteria

Nomination Process
Faculty, staff, students and alumni are eligible to nominate faculty members for the college’s teaching awards using the below nomination form. Each department’s Annual Evaluation Committee is also allowed to nominate deserving faculty members. Faculty members are allowed to self-nominate.
Once the nomination period closes, nominees are asked to submit a binder of materials that demonstrates excellence in teaching. The materials included in these binders should follow the university’s guidance for evidence in teaching in promotion and tenure. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- A list of all courses taught for the past three years;
- The last three years of teaching evaluations for courses;
- Copy of syllabi from all courses taught in the past three years;
- A letter grade distribution for each course;
- A teaching statement (i.e. teaching philosophy);
- A vita focused on teaching activities and accomplishments; and
- If appropriate, a list of doctoral students mentored and evidence of effective doctoral student instruction
